CO2 is a greenhouse gas which contributes to global warming. We aim to limit emissions and simultaneously generate chemicals and fuels from CO2 using electrocatalysis. Our work focuses on metal-based heterogeneous catalysts which can provide high reaction rates in tailored devices. The aim is to increase both activity and selectivity, which we can do by modifying the device, catalyst, and conditions. The target products are ethylene, ethanol, methane, formic acid, and syngas (CO and H2 mixtures). These products can be used directly as fuels or as precursors in a number of industrial processes. We construct full-cell assemblies that can demonstrate commercial feasibility.

Some recent examples of approaches to alter catalysts and devices are shown below:
